The MS Trust have put together the following hints an tips for preparing food and cooking whilst managing MS symptoms.
1. Organise the kitchen and keep commonly used items close to hand
2. Keep the kitchen as cool as possible
3. Try to batch-cook meals at times of the day that your energy is highest
4. Cook in bulk when you can and freeze for easier preparation when you feel most fatigued
5. Sit rather tan stand to cook and prepare meals
6. Get all the ingredients and utensils ready before starting to cook
7. Make use of labour-saving equipment where possible eg electric mixers, can openers and knives
8. Use ready-prepared food such as pre-grated cheese, diced meat and pre-washed salads and vegetables to reduce the energy required to prepare these foods
9. Frozen fruit and vegetables are just as high in vitamins and minerals as fresh options
10. Use wire baskets in pans for cooking pan-based items like pasta, rice and vegetables to save avoid lifting heavy pans
11. Microwave cooking save having t lift heavy pans too and does not heat up the kitchen
12. Invest in a one-pot cookery book to save on washing up
13. A trolley is useful to avoid extra walking and carrying in he kitchen and when serving
14. Soak dishes rather than washing up straight away
15. Consider a meal-delivery service where necessary (help may be available from social services for this)
