Premise of diet:
Leaky gut hypothesis; that intact proteins escape the gut and enter the bloodstream where they activate the immune system into attacking CNS tissue (myelin).
Structure of diet:
The 'Best Bet' diet is a strict exclusion diet avoiding:
- All dairy, grains, legumes (beans and pulses), yeast and eggs
- All allergenic foods identified by skin and ELISA tests
- All red meat and margarine
Allowing:
- Fish, skinless chicken or turkey breast for protein
- Fruits and vegetables for carbohydrates and microrutrients
- Extra-virgin olive oil and unrefined sunflower oil for fats
Recommending:
- As many of 17 specific recommended dietary supplements as your budget allows
The basis of the 'Best bet' diet is effectively following tenets of the Paloelithic (paleo; caveman) diet and as such is suggested to be highly compatible with our genetic make-up as it is the diet the human body grew up with over the last 2m years.
Cautionary notes:
- This diet had not been tested in any research trial so there is no evidence that it can help MS symptoms
- It is low in energy and may not be suitable for those with high energy needs or are already underweight
- May not be suitable for vegetarians or vegans as it cuts out an important source of protein.
