When it was recommended, following blood tests, that I should take certain dietary supplements it was [excuse the dreadful pun in advance] a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. I pride myself on eating a healthy, balanced diet (I'm a scientist with an academic interest in nutrition for goodness sake!) and getting all the nutrients required from food sources, so to be told I was deficient in certain vitamins and minerals was rather embarrassing! Although before anyone starts questioning my nutrition credentials (!) this deficiency likely came about as the result of being vegetarian - there are few plant-based B12 sources and to eat a large enough quantity consistently would be challenging; so I'll accept that without being too offended.
The dietary advice for PwMS is in line with the current UK dietary advice for the general population (The 'Eatwell Guide' discussed earlier in this section) but there are a few vitamins and minerals which have piqued the interest of researchers seeking to understand more about MS in relation to causes and treatment; these are discussed on the next few pages. .
It must be stated strongly that any supplementation should only be considered under the guidance of medical professionals, as
too much of certain vitamins and minerals can be as harmful as not enough. Certain supplements may interact adversely with DMD's you are taking so please, please consult your doctor or MS nurse before beginning any course of supplementation.
